	<title>Integrating Google Maps into Your Web Applications</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2683391</link>
    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    No special development tools are required in order to take advantage of Google&#039;s mapping API; all that is necessary is a text editor, Web browser, and a public Web server from which the scripts can be served. Note the server must be public, you can&#039;t develop on an internal server, as each request must communicate with the Google mapping server in order to work correctly. You will however need an API key provided by Google so that usage quotas can be monitored. Begin by reading through some of the usage rules and applying for the key here:&amp;#xD;

	<title>Adding Google Maps To Your Rails Applications</title>

    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>

    Although there&#039;s nothing preventing you from linking to Google&#039;s mapping JavaScript API and referencing the library directly from your views, jumping between Ruby/Rails syntax and JavaScript can quickly become a tedious affair. The YM4R/GM plugin remedies this issue nicely, abstracting the API calls through Ruby&#039;s familiar object-oriented syntax. With it you can do everything from render simple maps to build complex maps complete with custom markers, information windows, and clusters for facilitating the rendering of large numbers of markers.

    I don&#039;t like JavaScript 2, ECMAScript 4, or whatever it&#039;s called. That doesn&#039;t mean I&#039;m taking sides in the ongoing controversy. To the contrary -- I think the controversy is boring and lame. I don&#039;t like JS2 because I just don&#039;t care.

    A recent set of HTML5 discussions are changing the course of Comet. First, a recap of the last two years of Comet: With long-polling we set the bar to cross-browser push. With XHR streaming and ActiveXObject(’htmlfile’) we raised it to cross-browser streaming. With SSE we’ve been trying to raise the bar to native, cross-browser streaming. And there we’ve sat, hoping that browser vendors actually implement the latest SSE spec.

    Most web developers know the word but only some know what it stands for (Asynchronous Javascript And XML); others know the cleaning detergent and use it often. The rest of us simply run through our daily lives knowing something updated the stock ticker but not caring much about what it was. AJAX is a powerful tool, but frankly, it’s a pain to write the code it requires. Different browsers require different code; even different VERSIONS of browsers require different code.

I was surprised that I did not find a weatlh of examples for usage so I figured it shouldn&#039;t be too hard to get a decent example going. It turns out, it was even easier than I anticipated. I wanted to create an example where I would invoke an AJAX call to dynamically populate a dropdown list.

    In any reasonable language, it would first alert &quot;Hello&quot;, and then alert &quot;World&quot;. But noooo. Javascript&#039;s gotta get all fancy and defer execution until later. And at that point message is equal to &quot;World&quot; for both. So it&#039;s &quot;World&quot; &quot;World&quot;, which ain&#039;t right at all.

    Cascada Mobile, just release a beta of their Breeze mobile application development and distribution platform. What Breeze does is take applications that are written in HTML, JavaScript and CSS and compiles it into J2ME. It then tests the J2ME code against 100s of phones, ports them to those phones (a version is created for each phone type) and makes it easy for developers to distribute applications. Breeze also guides developers unfamiliar with writing mobile apps on how to use the native features of mobile phones such as contact lists or the camera.

    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    Most developers don’t know about—or don’t care enough about—binding in JavaScript. Yet this single issue is responsible for a sizeable portion of the questions on most JavaScript-related support channels, and thousands—if not millions—of hairs being tortured away from developer heads every single day. Yet with a little attention to this oft-overlooked subject, you can avoid wasting your time, energy, and patience and move on to more powerful, efficient scripting.

    But even as Javascript—as well as the HTML elements it has access to— continues to mature, the general perception of what these technologies enable do not. It took the Web 2.0 revolution to dispel the view that Javascript and Dynamic HTML were mainly useful for form validation and making annoying websites. With Tamarin coming to Firefox and SquirrelFish coming to WebKit, we are ready to see the next wave of projects that again expand our understanding of what is possible on the Web.

    It is an oft repeated misnomer that Comet is about long-lived HTTP connections, but this is simply not the case. Comet uses long-held HTTP requests rather than long-lived connections!

    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    Today we&#039;re releasing an updated version of our JavaScript client library, including new support for working with the Google Contacts Data API. This API lets users securely share their GMail contact lists with third-party sites, and now that it&#039;s available in JavaScript form, this access can be integrated directly into the rich environment of your AJAX-driven applications. All without writing a single line of complicated server-side code.

	<title>shiftzoom.js (zoom and pan functionality)</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2670154</link>
    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    shiftzoom.js 1.0 allows you to add zoom and pan functionality to oversized images on your webpages. It uses unobtrusive javascript to keep your code clean.&amp;#xD;
&amp;#xD;
It works in all the major browsers - Mozilla Firefox 1.5+, Opera 9+, IE 6+ and Safari. Works also on older browsers supporting images/ createElement/ getElementById, else it&#039;ll degrade and your visitors won&#039;t notice a thing.

	<title>Production JavaScript Debugging</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2669999</link>
    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    You know the scenario. A bug is filed for a JavaScript issue in production. You update your development server to the same files (allegedly) that are in production but you can’t reproduce the issue. Debugging your JavaScript code is horrifically difficult, if not impossible, because you’re following best practices and crunching the file using the YUI Compressor.
